Not satisfied with not being able to eat off the underside of my project, I began the dirty job of getting it right...

My first bit of advise... do NOT paint the car until you are satisfied with the engine bay and/or underneath the car... doing after the fact sucks...

Yah... I know.. should've done the bottom before the top... where the hell were you 6 years ago when I painted the car?

So, using an angle grinder, wire wheel and goggles, I jacked the car up and began grinding off 40+ years of crud and crap from under my project.

Using the tall jack stands, I had plenty of room to roll around on my creeper. Actually the worst of the entire project was the S#!* that kept flying into my face. I highly recommend that you where one of those painters ski masks to protect yourself.

The process:

Wire wheel on angle grinder stripping all grime, grit, crud and crap down to original red oxide primer.

Using Southern Polyurethanes, Inc. brush-able epoxy primer after using 180 grit to rough up for good adhesion and wiping down entire area to be painted with Southern Poly's prep solution.

Using gloss black, I painted all the frame rails from firewall back and all the brackets.

In the Wheel wells, I used Smart rubberized paintable undercoating for a good thick sound-deadening coating.

The underbody was covered using 3M "professional" paintable rubberized undercoating for a nice even more fine texture. Dried to a nice flat matte black.

The result is a clean uniform look. I really am happy with how the contrast of the gloss black frame rails and brackets are offset by the matte background of the undercoating.

I had even thought about painting the undercoating flat red but decided the black look so good, why mess it up.
